Responsible Sports Coaching

Let’s begin with what a Responsible Coach is not. A Responsible Coach is not a source of empty, unearned praise, or someone who is satisfied with everyone just having fun. A Responsible Coach exhibits a high level of coaching competence, achieves and maintains excellence on the field, and has many of the same obligations as a responsible parent, including ensuring player safety and placing education and character development before wins.

The Positive Coaching Alliance has developed a three-part set of guidelines to help coaches best benefit players and strengthen the values they’re learning from their Responsible Sports Parents. The principles are the same as those used by responsible parents: The Mastery Approach, Filling Emotional Tanks, and Honoring the Game.
