Summer for Schools

Amid reports that schools are losing funding for everything from school lunches to after-school programs, department-store chain Kohl’s has announced a contest that will let you help your school get funding. On July 7, the company said it would give half a million dollars to each of 20 schools this year, in recognition of the 10th anniversary of its Kohl’s Cares philanthropic program that supports children’s health and education.

Schools that teach kindergarten to 12th grade are eligible to win funds—whether it's for starting an art program, creating a new computer lab, or saving a music program. Through September 3, 2010, go to http://www.facebook.com/kohls to submit what your school could do with the funding.

Tell us how you feel: are you frustrated by program cutbacks in your own child’s school? If you had the power to gift a half million dollars to a school, how would you want the money used?

Martha and I were fortunate enough to participate in an after-school tutor program for k-5th graders at an elementary school in Southwest Denver for two years. However, due to lack of funding, the program was not renewed for the 2010-2011 school year. If I had the power to gift a half million dollars, I would renew this program for schools at risk of students falling behind due to a lack of after-school programs by way of no funds available.

Hi, I was just thinking of a way our schools can save money. I think if the schools did a science project on growing a garden. The schools can have the students protisapate in the project. They will be able to can their fresh vegies and such. They can save alot of money by doing this. I do alot of canning and it is much cheeper to do it than to have to buy the canned goods. Most schools have extra property and most comunitys will help out by donating their time and effort just to help the schools out where their children go to school. The Charlevoix County Jail in Michigan is doing this to save money and I think it would be it would be a good savings for our schools.

Hi, Over the last few years our Gifted and Talented Program has not received funding due to tight budgets in California. The children that are usually in an afterschool GATE program are 3rd-5th grade represented from different social/economical groups. As a teacher, I volunteered last year to this program with no funding.

If I had any money donated, I would use it to continue the afterschool program to engaged these at risk students.

This school year I want to start a recycling program and teach the children the benefits of recycling and using key concepts to help them recycle at home and give back to the planet. I would also like to have the students take some of the money earned through the recycling program and put it to work in their school, then take the rest of the money donated to a school or organization that would benefit other children in other areas who are facing funding problems.
