Like My Community™: Milwaukee

Learn more about seven worthwhile causes.

A Part of the Special Feature Like My Community

If you could give $30,000 to an organization that helps your community, which would you choose? A free clinic that provides medical care to the uninsured; a hospital that not only treats sick kids, but also cares for their families during their treatment; or a haven for at-risk children? Maybe your funds would go to an animal shelter or a city trail beautification project.

You can actually help make that choice in Milwaukee. Ten local Liberty Mutual agents with deep roots and deep passion for their community have nominated seven causes in Liberty Mutual’s new Like My Community™ project. The project gives agents in three cities – Milwaukee, Dallas-Fort Worth and Baltimore – the chance to nominate worthwhile organizations in their cities on dedicated Facebook pages, and the three causes that earn the most votes will receive $30,000 each from Liberty Mutual for improvements and renovations.

On the Milwaukee page, ten agents have posted videos that give a glimpse into the organizations they’re most passionate about. You can vote once per day, per cause, until August 1st. The good news is that no matter which association gets the money, you’ll know it’s working for good.

Here’s an overview of the Milwaukee agents and their local picks:

ALBRECHT FREE CLINIC

Liberty Mutual agent Erich Olson talks about how the Albrecht Free Clinic, the only free clinic in Washington County, has helped the uninsured and underinsured with medical care since 1996. He’s watched as the clinic has helped people stay afloat when they’ve suddenly become unemployed, helping them cover medications, treatment and checkups in some of life’s most privately agonizing times. The most inspiring part about contributing to the Albrecht Free Clinic, he says, is that “you may be helping out a family member, friend or neighbor without even knowing it.”

CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL OF WISCONSIN

Liberty Mutual agent Jeremy Hendrix has seen firsthand the support that Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin lends families, as the father of a child who was born seriously ill. He and fellow Milwaukee agent Reed Noel show that the hospital, one of the national’s top pediatric facilities, not only provides inpatient and intensive care services to thousands of children, but support to their siblings and parents in a stressful time. The hospital would use their additional funding to build a sibling playroom – what the agents call a “playroom of hope” – to lessen the burden for entire families of a hospitalized child.

MILWAUKEE RESCUE MISSION

The direct and immediate impact that the Milwaukee Rescue Mission has had on people’s lives since the 1800s is what impressed Liberty Mutual Agents Jeff Gulke and Nathan Kohls to nominate it for the community prize. Each day the Rescue Mission provides shelter and meals for up to 400 homeless men, women, and children, serving more than 700 meals a day. But the shelter doesn’t just stop at providing basic necessities; they also support and provide guidance to families as they rebuild their lives. In a tough economy, they say, even more families are headed toward the shelter, and extra funding would ensure no one gets turned away.

OZAUKEE INTERURBAN TRAIL ADVISORY COUNCIL

As an avid trail user, Liberty Mutual Agent Rob Gudates urges you to vote for funding the Ozaukee Interurban Trail. With more than 30 miles of paved recreational trails, the Ozaukee is a safe environment where families can spend quality time together. The Advisory Council was formed to assist in planning, development, and implementation of the Trail to promote Ozaukee County's unique cultural, historical and natural resources, but it’s in need of funding to repave, renovate and expand the trail system.

PREVENTION AND PROTECTION OF ABUSED CHILDREN

Few understand the importance of organizations like PPAC than Liberty Mutual Agent Sofia Biernat-Olsen. The local nonprofit helps children who have been abused and are at risk for abuse through intervention, support and ongoing education. Her own childhood was affected by child abuse, and an organization like PPAC, she notes, “saved my life.” Extra funding would help protect even more children in the Milwaukee area at risk for child abuse.

WASHINGTON COUNTY HUMANE SOCIETY

Liberty Mutual Agent Jerry Lorenz tells the compelling story of the Washington County Humane Society, which provides medical services, shelter and placement for 3,000 animals each year. As a full-service shelter and animal services provider, WCHS relies on 200 volunteers to provide attention, food and exercise for animals up for adoption, and extra funding would go toward emergency medical services.

THE WEST BEND BASEBALL ASSOCIATION

Liberty Mutual Agent Chris Harder tells the story of the West Bend Baseball Association, a nonprofit organization whose baseball field and stadium have been hosting America’s favorite pastime for 75 years. More than that, he says, the field is a destination for the community to gather, and he wants to ensure it’s preserved for the next generation. Funding would go toward making the stadium a safer place to gather, providing much-needed repairs to aging stadium seating.
